The history of coffee in Australia dates back to the arrival of the British in 1788. According to Nicola Teffer, the First Fleet unloaded coffee seeds and plants that were collected in Brazil, during the voyage to Australia. But there was a slight problem. The climate in Sydney was not conducive to producing coffee commercially. As a result, coffee was far too expensive for the colonists. They tried in vain to find substitutes, though they found little success. During the 1870s, coffee houses started slowly appearing in Sydney but they did not last long. The Kona variety is the most popular of all varieties produced on the islands. Coffee production in Hawaii tends to be small scale, with about 8000 acres of coffee divided among 790 farms.
