Here’s a wonderful post by TheShot about the state of the retail coffee industry over the last few years. It’s a well written, informative and insightful analysis coming from a blog that’s been around since 2005. With the supply of excellent quality coffeeshops having grown significantly, imitation has run rampant thereby reducing the prospects of advancement. As the author(s) state, “much of the industry seems to be holding out for the promise of yet another, equivalent quantum leap — the likes of which we will probably never see again”. That’s the crux of the matter, it’s hard to maintain that logarithmic increase forever, eventually everything returns to the mean.
